GENERAL DENTISTRY
AT EDINBURGH G&T WE BELIEVE THAT ALL OUR PATIENTS DESERVE TO HAVE A SMILE THEY CAN BE PROUD OF.
We offer tooth-coloured fillings, tooth-coloured veneers and crowns as a minimum standard. For many years now we have been aiming to phase out the use of dental amalgam, due to the environmental impact of mercury. In addition, we do not believe it is a very attractive material to place in your tooth. Our dentists will take time to fully examine you and discuss all available treatment options and estimated costs, before giving you time to decide how you wish to proceed.
FILLINGS
A filling is required to replace missing tooth structure, either lost through decay or chipping. Are all tooth-coloured fillings the same? The answer is no. There are a huge variety of materials and techniques which can be used to place your filling. We can assure you that we only use the highest quality materials to achieve a natural and durable finish, coupled with the most modern techniques available.
VENEERS
A thin, semi-translucent, highly durable piece of glass-ceramic material that is permanently bonded to the front surface of your tooth. This material produces impressive results due to the very natural tooth colouring and excellent light-optical properties. Whilst not suitable for everyone, veneers are the most aesthetic alternative for a variety of dental conditions involving the front teeth.
CROWNS
A crown is a cap that fits over the remaining tooth structure to protect and preserve it and is held in place by a dental adhesive or cement. Either manufactured from Zirconia (a very durable Ceramic) or glass-ceramic; both offer a highly-aesthetic, strong, tooth-coloured restoration. A crown may be recommended to you if the size of the filling means that this would offer a better solution for you in the long-term to help preserve the longevity of your tooth.
BRIDGES
Bridges are restorations that join an artificial zirconia or glass-ceramic tooth with adjacent teeth or implants. They can greatly improve appearance and bite stability where you have a missing tooth, and if cared for properly can provide years of good service.
DENTURES
A denture is a removable appliance, usually made from acrylic or a combination of acrylic with a chrome-cobalt metal frame. A partial denture can be fitted around your natural teeth to replace some missing teeth, whilst a full denture is appropriate where all your teeth are missing. We were one of very few practices in Scotland that also offered telescopic dentures.
ROOT CANAL TREATMENT
This treatment may be required if you have a large cavity or filling in your tooth that has reached the central part of your tooth containing the nerve, known as the pulp. You may also need this treatment if the tooth has broken, exposing the pulp, as this level of trauma can result in infection and irreversible damage. The aim of root canal treatment is to clean out all the infected pulp and disinfect this area to remove as much bacteria as possible. An inert material is then used to fill in the small space left in the centre of your tooth. Your treatment will be completed by placement of a filling or crown. This procedure aims to enable you to keep your tooth for a bit longer, as the only alternative is to have the tooth removed.
