I've been told I can't have Invisalign treatment, what can I do?

If you've been told in the past you can't have Invisalign it might not mean this is the case now.

Invisalign treatment is always evolving and if you were told you can’t have Invisalign previously that may not be the case now. As a Invisalign Platinum Elite provider we are committed to excellent results and outstanding patient care. You can book a free Invisalign consultation and we will provide you with the treatment plan to achieve the smile you’ve always wanted.

Should I rinse after brushing?

No, don’t rinse your mouth immediately after brushing.

This washes away the protective fluoride from toothpaste, which strengthens enamel and prevents decay. Spit out excess toothpaste and let the fluoride work for at least 30 minutes. If you must rinse, use a fluoride mouthwash to maintain the benefits.”

Are diet drinks better for you?

Diet drinks may seem better due to low or no sugar, but they’re often highly acidic, eroding enamel over time. Regular consumption can weaken teeth, leading to sensitivity or cavities. Water or unsweetened teas are safer choices for your dental health.

Should I avoid the dentist while pregnant?

No, many pregnant women believe they should skip dental appointments for safety, or that babies “steal” calcium from their teeth, causing decay. This is false

Dental care is safe and vital during pregnancy, as hormonal changes increase risks of gum disease and cavities, which can affect both mother and baby.

Babies don’t take calcium from teeth; instead, dietary calcium supports foetal growth, while poor oral hygiene or acid from morning sickness can harm teeth. Regular check-ups, cleanings, and good hygiene are essential, and at Edinburgh Gums & Teeth, we provide pregnancy-safe care, including Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT), to ensure a healthy smile.”

  • Most people rinse straight after brushing… but that might not be doing your teeth any favours.

Toothpaste contains fluoride, which helps strengthen enamel and protect against decay.
When you rinse straight away, you wash a lot of that protection off.

That’s why we often recommend: Spit, don’t rinse

No need to go full astronaut and swallow it 😅 but letting the fluoride sit on your teeth for a bit longer can make a real difference.

If you’re not sure about your brushing technique, our hygienists are always happy to show you.

  • You can always ask our hygienists to show you how to clean those tricky, hard to reach areas properly

A lot of people feel unsure about brushing technique, especially around the back molars or inside surfaces, and that’s completely normal

There’s absolutely no embarrassment, our job is to help you improve, not judge

Sometimes just a small adjustment can make a big difference to your oral health
